Happy Birthday, Will - Updated

William, that is. Shakespeare. Today is probably his birthday (historians don't know for sure but guess at it based on his baptismal record). If you want to join in a little fêting, here's one place you can do so.

Update: If you're so inclined, you're invited to come back here after visiting the link and play along by posting your own favorite Shakespearean play.

Oh, all right--I'll go first.

The Taming of the Shrew. It's hilarious and politically incorrect, celebrating marriage and traditional gender roles (I don't care what the feminist critics say. Kate's final speech is sincere, not ironic). And I love any story in which the unpopular girl (of which I was one) nabs the BMOC (for my younger readers, that's Big Man On Campus). And did you ever notice that Petruchio's method of wooing Kate could be described in terms of law and gospel?

Next?

Before I clicked on your link I thought, I'm such a freak, I like King Lear! Now I feel super lame since it was so popular over there. Well, anyway . . . it's a total downer, but awesome. How sharper than a serpent's tooth! Waaaaaaaah!!!

My friend Gauntlets did Shrew in college forensics and rocked it like you wouldn't believe.

My fave is Much Ado About Nothing. "Is it possible disdain should die while she hath such meat food to eat?" But my husband still won't let me name one of our daughters Hero.

If I ever get a blog (big 'if'), I'm going to be The Untamed Shrew.
