How to Teach Spelling in One Easy Step
Have your child misbehave on a field trip to the extent that he needs to write apology notes to the seven other people who were in the van with him on the way home. By the time he's done writing you will never again have to tell him how to spell the following words:

Aw, what a nice thing to say, Leah. Thank you! The funny follow-up is that Evan totally embraced writing the apology notes. It really didn't seem like a punishment but was more like writing letters to his friends. As he was writing each one he was enjoying talking and thinking about the recipient and wondering if the recipient would be happy to get a note from him. He decided to write the notes in the order of severity of offense--doing the ones first for those people he thought he was most rude to. He was much pickier than I would have been about neatness, erasing and erasing again when things didn't look like he wanted them to. And all the children he wrote notes to were incredibly gracious and kind (most of them were a few years older). In fact one lovely young lady drew a picture and wrote him back, which thrilled him. All in all, a really good experience.
