What is the point in spending weeks on teaching something if they are not ready for it?

My school growing up was thrilled that they were using more advanced textbooks and teaching concepts like diagramming sentences in 4th and 5th grade.

I struggled with it and struggled with it, thinking I must be dumb because I wasn't getting it, when in 7th grade upon entering public school, the teacher taught it (to most of the kids for the first time), and I had an A-ha. There were many things that were that way in the private school I had attended.

And it is so AMAZING when that happens to see it happen and realize "now that wasn't so hard." I used to struggle so much with my perception of when my kids should be doing something as opposed to when they were ready to do it. The classroom doesn't allow for that.RPWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16686240798146992394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-25103856025608165632007-11-19T18:26:00.000-06:002007-11-19T18:26:00.000-06:00I have been amazed over and over again how some co...I have been amazed over and over again how some concept that would take 3 weeks in a Kindergarten class can be absorbed, processed and regurgitated effortlessly during a dinner-time conversation.

I've also noticed how teacher-types I talk to focus on quantifiable skills: is she reading two syllable words yet? while fellow homeschoolers tend to focus on real-life task kids can accomplish and the ability of their children to problem solve!Elephantschildhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14610471467736150461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-8983777360299524962007-11-19T10:29:00.000-06:002007-11-19T10:29:00.000-06:00This is a great encouragement. But like you said, learning how to learn will help our children fill in a gap when they recognize one.Marie N.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02358976552469177345noreply@blogger.com
