In order for my ds to play this summer the league has run our life...6 days a week...sometimes 7. Many, too many, organizations think they can run the kids (and therefore the families) lives for them.

Whatever happened to just playing a sport for fun?

My HS experience sounds like yours. I made sure that all my work was done before I got home since it was not a very "study friendly" environment!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-18163380450491875702007-07-26T15:35:00.000-05:002007-07-26T15:35:00.000-05:00This is the reason I homeschooled Nick starting in...This is the reason I homeschooled Nick starting in 7th grade. Our entire day and family life was built around the school. From morning to night and even on the weekends when he played sports. I was so thrilled to grab our life back!

At one point our oldest son Theo wanted to quit piano. He was very accomplished at that point and attending the Cleveland Institute of Music. I told him that he could not quit because I didn't want him to say later "If only...."Presbyterahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14628618488486799177noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-75640258907611472362007-07-26T15:04:00.000-05:002007-07-26T15:04:00.000-05:00Your post reminded me of something I read in a boo...Your post reminded me of something I read in a book about modern Japan and its high school students. The only way to play flute at my huge high school was to be in the marching band, which practiced all day every day starting in mid-July and for three hours after school during the marching season. I already had swim team at 6:00 in the morning!

We homeschooled Bethany through high school for exactly the same reasons that you cited, Cheryl. She needed a couple of hours a day for music practice. Plus, as she said, "If I go to school, when will I read." :)Janehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14984938560695736640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-27707465964443348422007-07-26T09:34:00.000-05:002007-07-26T09:34:00.000-05:00Excellent thoughts Cheryl. And yes, I regret it, especially when it comes to wanting to play hymns. I even stopped playing the flute after 8th grade (4 yrs under my belt then) because I didn't want to do marching band, I wanted to play volley ball and they wouldn't let me do both and the band director wouldn't let me just do orchestra, you *had* to do marching band. So I chose none. Then getting ready for college (CURF), I thought it might be nice to start flute again (I really missed playing, had even picked it up for my talent in the junior miss competition) so I wrote a letter to the instructor explaining my situation and asked what I could do to join. I never received a response. I was angry and hurt and haven't really picked up the instrument since.

Sorry this got so long, apparently I still have anger issues.
