Gilgamesh and Shakespeare and Canterbury Tales and more all generally "cleaned up" for high school students.Cherylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04817680463922038375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-6072646449079426352009-03-20T07:52:00.000-06:002009-03-20T07:52:00.000-06:00It was interesting to see when and why you read th...It was interesting to see when and why you read the books. I read a surprising number of them in high school or before, including some--like Candide--that I am surprised passed muster for high school English in Anderson, Indiana.Janehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14984938560695736640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-35312052143050074892009-03-19T13:49:00.000-06:002009-03-19T13:49:00.000-06:00I think as much as anything I'm just blown away by...I think as much as anything I'm just blown away by the sheer volume.

So, Mr. RUT, how many of these have you read? :-)Cherylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04817680463922038375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-74078241152431554342009-03-19T13:39:00.000-06:002009-03-19T13:39:00.000-06:00Mr. Roundunvarnished checking in on a day that fin...Mr. Roundunvarnished checking in on a day that finds me not very motivated to work!

Overall, not a bad canon - though I agree there are a couple of things that should not be on a high school list.

Given the number of "lefty" things in there, one would hope for a little more balance than Solzhenitsyn. I'd recommend Ayn Rand's "Anthem" and Bradbury's "Farenheit 451" be added, along with 1984, of course.

And you are right: there are several things on there that are just too THICK (either in content or length) for high schoolers. One wonders if they are just trying to get the canon 'out of the way' so that college is filled with politically correct junk?

Still, overall, this is not a bad list. I expected much worse.

Back to work!

:)Phillip Magnesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17841725361772353858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973269483459581996.post-72381682107281225532009-03-19T13:13:00.000-06:002009-03-19T13:13:00.000-06:00I also hated Wuthering Heights--a horrible, balefu...I also hated Wuthering Heights--a horrible, baleful, droning celebration of the macabre.
